Winter White Wonderland

Last weekend I took the studio pup for a lovely long walk around Staunton Harold. Armed with my camera I headed for Dimminsdale Wood as I was hoping to see the snowdrops out in all their beauty & we weren’t disappointed,  there was a wonderful white carpet of snowdrops all with their heads popping up under the wood land branches with the sunlight shimmering through.

It was like a little magical glade & reminded me of an old favourite childhood book, the Flower Fairys!

This got me thinking,  how beautiful would a snowdrop wedding be?

After a quick search I found the stunning Hodsock Priory which offers a ‘Snow Drop Wedding Package’.

What a wonderful idea if you’re planning a winter wedding with a difference!

Traditions, customs, etiquette & a few little tips!

If you’ve decided to have a traditional wedding it can be confusing who does what & when, particularly if you’ve never arranged a wedding before! While chatting through stationery orders we’re often asked for our thoughts & ideas. Weddings can be tricky & stressful but thankfully there’s some good old wedding traditions that can help solve your problems. Some of them should most definitely stay in the past but others are kind of cute, so if for one day why not embrace a few old traditions and have fun?!

We’ve put together a few little tips, ideas & a whole heap of traditions to help you through.

The Dress..

is the most widely known superstition! The dress shouldn’t be seen by the groom prior to the wedding! Today most Brides wear white or ivory following an old tradition to signify virginity, happiness and joy. Historically though brides would have worn their favourite colour or dress so why not now? Ultimately go for what YOU want to wear & find your perfect dress!  Check out the new trend for floral printed wedding dresses they’re gorgeous!

The Rings…

are traditionally worn to show a person’s marital status. The tradition dates back to Roman times. It’s the most symbolic piece of jewellery anyone will wear. The unbroken circular band symbolises the eternal commitment from one person to another. A lovely idea is to have rings cut from the same piece of gold or platinum! In the past a ring bearer would have carried the ring on a cushion. Today the rings are usually paid for by the groom & are often carried by the best man. So you have the engagement ring, now all you have to do is find a stunning wedding ring to go with it!

WANT THAT WEDDING

Something old….

something new, something borrowed, something blue, & a silver sixpence in your shoe!

The last part of the rhyme, isn’t used much any more (probably because it was pretty uncomfortable!) but a silver sixpence symbolised happiness, spiritual & financial wealth. Why not add ‘I DO’ to the soles of your shoes in silver or in silver diamanté, it’s great to make your guests giggle when they catch a glimpse!

The bride wears ‘something old’ as a symbol of her old life that she is leaving behind & old friends to bring into her new life. (I had an old silver locket tied into my bouquet with photos of my grandparents.) The ‘new’ refers to new hope for her new life & is probably your dress and shoes. ‘Something borrowed’ is often a garter from a happily married girlfriend is believed to pass on good luck to the newly-weds. Blue symbolises purity, faithfulness & commitment to her husband, so tie a bow & add it to your undies!

Art in leaves

We came across an amazing artist called Lorenzo Duran. He has developed our favourite art of paper cutting into a  whole new dimension.

He’s created beautiful masterpieces out of leaves!  Lorenzo would find a perfect leaf then wash, dry & press it gently. He would then carefully cut away to leave a unique & delicate piece of art.

It must take incredible patience as leaves can be so fragile and brittle when dry!  Just as he finished a piece that could have taken days to create it may just break!

Lorenzo has now moved on to develop new ‘Naturayarte’ projects & is no longer creating these amazing leaf creations but we just thought they were so inspirational that we wanted to blog about them! We’re looking forward to seeing what he develops next!

Tea cup treasures!

I  read an article recently that sounded just like me.. in fact I’m sure I’ve said almost the same thing after a visit to one of the many auctions, antique markets or car boots that I’ve trawled hunting for a treasured hand painted teacup and saucer !

Yasmin le Bon was quoted as saying..

‘NOTHING GIVES ME MORE JOY.. than finding a beautiful hand-painted teacup and saucer.  My husband Simon is obsessed with making traditional tea, and I like having tea parties with lots of different cups.’

After collecting some beautiful bone china tea cups for our vintage style wedding I just had to do something gorgeous with all my favs! So some have been turned into candles (the most perfect little gifts) and others are holding some of my treasured vintage jewellery on my dressing table.

This then got me to thinking about all the other beautiful creative ideas that artists had been inspired to do with teacups and Jennifer Collier and her vintage paper teacups came to mind. These stunning pieces of artwork are simply amazing.

Jennifer talks a little about her process on her website:

‘My practice focuses on creating work from paper; by bonding, waxing, trapping and stitching I produce unusual paper ‘fabrics’, which are used to explore the ‘remaking’ of household objects. The papers are treated as if cloth, with the main technique employed being stitch; a contemporary twist on traditional textiles.’

The end result, I’m sure you’ll agree, is amazing.

The HB girls have decided to have a tea party next year in aid of our favourite charity, it’s also a wonderful way of having a traditional afternoon tea and getting the teacup collection out of storage (we’ll keep you posted!)

Pink Pierrot

Just had to share this beautiful inspiration board with you, from the wonderful Snippet & Ink blog

“Pierrot’s costume was the main inspiration here. His ruffled collar and cuffs inspired a dramatic ruffled wedding gown. The black-and-white palette made me think of whimsical chalkboard typography and calligraphy, but I also added some pale pink for a little romance. Pierrot’s pom poms made me think of this dark chocolate truffle-studded wedding cake, and his painted face translates to real life in the form of black wing-tip liquid eyeliner”.

Calligraphy: a perfect finishing touch

I really love calligraphy.

I think this is in part because I’m a Janeite & the beautiful curly script makes me think of a time when writing with a nib & an inkwell was the only way to write at all.

Whenever I see an address beautifully written in calligraphy it makes me think that it should be presented to it’s recipient on a silver platter by a butler wearing white gloves. Sadly, nowadays most of us don’t have butlers & it’s not really practical to send all our correspondence written in calligraphy.

I do think it’s perfect for special occasions though. It adds a really special touch to envelopes, invitations, place cards & favour tags.

We offer a calligraphy service here at Hummingbird. We can add names or address to any of your stationery items for small extra charge. For more information get in touch with us in the studio on 01530 411905 or email us at info@hummingbirdcards.co.uk
